Week II Announcement
Hi All, First, many apologies. My kids’ school closed because of the snow and ice, and I got a little behind. To try to make up for the delay I have given you an extra two days to complete everything. Let me know if you have questions or concerns about the due date. I’ve posted the list of activities for this week below (and they can also be found at this link), but first, read the following: Grades I have finished grading your introductions and blog post #1. For the introductions, you get full credit for doing it. For the blog post, I paid attention to how you responded to…

Prompt: Blog Post #3
Consider the annotations you made for Baldwin’s story. How does the pattern that you’ve identified relate to the overall significance of the story? In other words, how do the places in the text you’ve annotated relate to what the story as a whole is trying to illustrate? (About the relationship between the brothers? Jazz music? the African American experience? New York? or some other major aspect of the story)

Prompt: Annotations for “Sonny’s Blues”
Make 5 annotations across James Baldwin’s story “Sonny’s Blues” that comment on and identify a theme that appears throughout the story. This could be a single idea that the story returns to again and again or a use of imagery that Baldwin develops as the story unfolds. (Remember, these don’t need to be formal responses or anything. You are writing short notes that could be incomplete thoughts and questions. You should think of them as representative of your reading experience: noting the things you recognize as well as the aspects of the text that might cause you to be curious.)

Since last week was the first one, and it was short, and I mistakenly used the wrong password for the reading—I’m carrying over some of the work to this week. Please try to finish the list of items here ASAP. Please send me your CUNY Commons username if you have not already. And, as a reminder: please don’t post your responses as comments; use the blog writing feature on the site. The rest of the items should be finished by Sunday. This week I would like you to start using the hypothes.is social annotation tool. (This is…

Prompt: Blog Post #2
What does Culler mean by the “paradox of literature” at the end of the chapter? Do any of the poems listed for this week’s reading exhibit the kinds of paradoxes Culler describes? Why?
-
Prompt: Annotation #1
Read the poems listed for this week on the syllabus. Use hypothes.is to ask questions you have about your reading. What parts of the texts are you curious about and why?
