themes of servitude and freedom

Both Ariel and Caliban yearn for the same thing, but each has a different view of their situation. Ariel’s hope and Caliban’s resentment show their distinct attitude toward Prospero’s authority. If Ariel’s servitude is fueled by loyalty and hopes to have freedom, then Caliban’s service displays the anger and frustration of captivity. Shakespeare shows the complicated experience because of the different outlooks that these two characters have on concepts of freedom and servitude.
